It is because all international visitors who like to enter Myanmar through one of Thai Myanmar Border Gates should know this practical information before they enter Myanmar through Thailand Myanmar Border Gates.

How many Thai Myanmar Border Gates are permitted ?

Under the agreement between the Union of Myanmar Government and the Government of the Kingdom of Thailand, the following border entrances / exits have been designated as international entrances / exits with effect from 0800 hours on the 28th August 2013 (Wednesday), and those Myanmar and Thai citizens as well as Third country citizens holding valid passport with visa will be permitted to enter and depart from Myanmar;

Thailand Checkpoints

  • There are five checkpoints on Thai-Burma border connecting the southern part of Myanmar:
    Mae Sot (Tak Province, Thailand) / Myawaddy (Kayin State, Myanmar)
    Mae Sai (Chiang Rai Province, Thailand) / Thachileik (Shan State, Myanmar)
    Ranong (Ranong Province, Thailand) / Kawthaung (Tanintharyi Region, Myanmar)
    Phu Nam Ron (Kanchanaburi, Thailand) / Htee Kee (Tanintharyi Region, Myanmar) where the eVisa is not available for border-crossing
    Three Pagodas Checkpoint that is only open for Burmese and Thai residents.                           

How to travel ?

  • Maesot / Myawaddy

To get to Maesot 

  •  01h20m by air and 10 hrs by bus from Bangkok
  • 04 to 06 hrs by bus from Chaing Mai

From Myawaddy

  • 02 hrs and 30m by bus to Mawlamyin

Mae Sai / Thachileik

To get to Mae Sai

  • 02 hrs by bus from Chaing Rai
  • 04 hrs by bus  from Chain Mai

From Thachileik

  • Domestic airport is available to connect to other cities in Myanmar .
  • 02 hrs by bus to Kyaing Tong ( Airport also available in Kyaing Tong )

Ranong / Kawthaung

To get to Ranong

  • 02 hrs 50min by air , 12 hrs by bus and 10 hrs by train from Bangkok
  • 08 to 08 hrs by bus from Phuket

From Kawthaung

  • 03hrs and 35 min by air to Yangon
  • 01 hr by air to Dawei
  • 07 to 08 hrs by bus to Myeik

Phu Nam Ron/Htee Kee

To get to Phu Nam Ron

  • 2hrs by bus; 2h12min by train via Klein Station from Kanchaburi
  • 3hrs by bus; 5hrs by train from Bangkok

Warm advices :

Maesot : known as the most used check point , probably there will the long lines at the customs , you are advised to stay overnight in Mae Sot .

Mae Sai : known as overland travel further beyond Kyaing Tong is prohibited for border-crossing travellers , the best solution is to fly to your destination from Thachileik or Kyaing Tong . Why not contact us to get an overland travel permit for you , please just contact us .

Phu Nam Ron:
– If you are entering Myanmar from Phu Nam Ron, a Myanmar visa MUST be obtained beforehand as eVisa doesn’t work. But there’s no problem getting out of Myanmar from this checkpoint.
